Lawrence opens season with win over Ironton
LOUISA — Lawrence County got two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and some stingy pitching and defense on the way to a season-opening 2-1 win over the Ironton Fighting Tigers.

Senior right-hander Kevin Workman pitched four innings and gave up three hits while striking out four, but got no decision for the Bulldogs. He was relieved by senior Brad Caudill, who hurled one inning and got the win as junior Chris Pope threw the final two innings and notched a save.

The Bulldogs got their runs when Adam Preston's drive to the alley in right center was mishandled and Chad Stepp, pinch running for Brad Caudill, scored from second. Pope, who had drawn a walk, advanced to third to give the Dawgs men at the corners.

A mistimed pick-off maneuver by Ironton's Matt White allowed Pope to reach home plate, giving the Bulldogs their final margin of victory.

"There are going to be a lot of games like that one," said Lawrence County head coach Randy Keeton. "We just hope to win our share of them. We have a lot of tough games on our schedule. We have some tough games coming up in New York, plus we play in a very tough district with Boyd County, Ashland and Rose Hill. There will be a lot of one and two run games this year."

Keeton's team returns seven starters and 12 of 16 players from last season's 25-9 regional finalist squad, including Big Sandy News All-Area players Kevin Workman and Kyle Barnette.

"We hope to get stronger as the weather warms up," said Keeton. "We have a chance to have a nice pitching staff and have several good, solid hitters in the lineup. It will be a tough schedule for us, though."

The Bulldogs took on Russell after presstime Tuesday and leave later this week for New York, where they will take on some stiff competition from the Empire State before returning home to take on regional competition.
