Betsy Layne opens season with win over Magoffin
ALLEN — Betsy Layne recovered from a disappointing defensive start to defeat Magoffin County in high school baseball action Tuesday night at Stumbo Park.

After opening the door for Magoffin County in the top of the first, the Bobcats rallied to claim an 8-4 victory in the season-opening contest for both teams.

Two Betsy Layne errors in the opening inning helped the Hornets reach Bobcat starter Brett Preston for four early runs, but the senior right-hander recovered in strong fashion to get the win.

Randall Craft, after reaching base on a strike out, Courtney Conley, Brad Marshall, and Adam Smith all scored in the top of the first as Magoffin County grabbed the quick four-run advantage.

But Betsy Layne rallied with a single run in the first, three in the third, and the lead for good with a single tally the home half of the fourth frame.

Preston followed the rough first inning up with three shutout innings to record the victory. Junior righty Jordan Kidd threw three scoreless innings in relief to preserve the win.

Magoffin County managed only one hit, a third inning Sahin Howard single, after the first inning.

Kidd did not allow a hit while striking out four and walking two to get the save. He also led the Bobcats offensively, banging out three hits in four plate appearances and also driving in three runs.

Preston helped his own cause by driving in two runs while going one for four at the plate.

Lance Collins and Ryan Lawson pounded out two hits apiece for the Bobcats while Collins scored twice and Lawson drove in two runs.

The win gives the Bobcats a 1-0 start to the 2003 season, while the loss starts the Hornets' year at 0-1. Magoffin County was in action last night (Thursday) at Johnson Central.
