Lady Tigers open season with win over P'burg
by Alton Huff

PRESTONSBURG ó Paintsville used a whole lot of Heather Daniel to open its 2003 softball season on a successful note Thursday at Archer Park.

The Lady Tigers, with Daniel as both the hitting and pitching star, defeated homestanding Prestonsburg 4-1 in the season opener for Paintsville.

Daniel, a senior, enjoyed a four-for-four effort at the plate and allowed just one run on three hits to claim the mound victory.

Paintsville took a lead it would never relinquish in the top of the first when shortstop Lucinda Castle walked and scored on Danielís first hit of the day, a one-out triple.

The Lady Tigers added a single run in the third when Daniel, who scored twice to go with the one run batted in, singled and eventually scored on a base hit off the bat of Danielle Bundy.

Paintsville added a pair of runs in the first and Daniel made the most of her support, striking out six while walking just two and hitting another batter in her seven innings of work.

The Lady Tigers finished with 10 hits, two of which belonged to catcher Savannah Moore. Julie Whitaker, Bundy, Brittany Webb, and Leann Hensley had one hit each for Paintsville.

Prestonsburg, 1-1, took advantage of a couple bases on balls and a pair of grounders to dent the plate with its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Brittany Carey, Jenny Humphrey and Rachel Blackburn banged out a single apiece to account for the Lady Blackcatsí three hits.

Daniel faced just five batters over the limit and allowed Prestonsburg runners to get as far as third base only twice.
