Lawrence County's Riffe captures tennis title
LOUISA — The Lawrence County boys' and girls' tennis teams got the season underway last Monday, participating in a pre-region tournament at Ashland Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs turned in some impressive results, headed by the dominating play of sophomore Matthan Riffe, who ran through the draw without losing a set to capture the singles' title.

Lawrence County also had two entrants reach the semi-finals. The doubles team of Chris Martin/Tyler Maynard reached the semis before falling to No. 1 seed and eventual champions Sparkman/Vermani of Russell.

In girls' play, sophomore Megan Sammons reached the semi-finals of singles play before falling in a three-hour, three-set match.

"Overall, I was happy with our team's effort in the tournament. Matthan led the way for the boys' team, which finished second of 11 teams in the draw. I also thought Megan played a great tournament," said Lawrence County head coach Chad Williams.

The Bulldogs have increased their strength of schedule this year by playing some of the top teams in Kentucky and West Virginia.

"We have a tough schedule this year, playing two of the top teams in Kentucky and two of the top teams in West Virginia, and I am looking forward to seeing how we compete against top-notch competition," Williams said.

Last Wednesday, the teams defeated East Carter to start the regular season at 1-0.

"The boys' match could have turned out to be close, but Chris Martin and Tyler Maynard came through with two good singles wins," Williams said. "Our girls didn't play as well, but still secured the team win. Our team has one match this week before they hit the heart of the season Monday against Russell," he said.
