Marine Corps Sgt. Travis P. Hillman, son of Tammy L. Harton of Ashland and Dean L. Hillman of Louisa, is preparing to reboard ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group while assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Hillman's unit had been on a routine overseas deployment since Aug. 2002 participating in exercises and operations in Djibouti, Kosovo, Kenya, the Arabian Gulf and Iraq. Hillman was preparing to return to his home base when he received orders to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in March.

Hillman's unit is an expeditionary intervention force with the ability to rapidly organize for combat operations in virtually any environment. MEUs are composed of more than 2,000 personnel and are divided into an infantry battalion; aircraft squadron; support group and command element. With this combination, Hillman's unit supplies and sustains itself for quick mission accomplishment and for clearing the way for follow-on forces.

Hillman is a 1995 graduate of Boyd County High School and joined the Marine Corps in June 1995.
