P’burg council to fill empty seat
Appointed member will serve until special election in November
by Susan Allen

PRESTONSBURG — With the death of long-time Prestonsburg City Councilman Billy Ray Collins, council members will need to name his replacement, who will serve until November’s general election.

The remaining members of the city council will decide in an open meeting who will fill Collins’ seat, according to a spokesperson at the Legislative Research Committee (LRC).

Whoever is chosen will serve until the election, when the seat will be on the ballot for anyone interested in running to fill the unexpired term.

Last fall, Collins was elected to serve another two-year term beginning in January. Collins died Saturday at Highlands Regional Medical Center after being diagnosed last year with lung cancer.

Whoever is elected in November’s election will serve the remainder of the term, according to the LRC spokesperson.

Persons interested in the temporary council seat can either contact current council members or attend the meeting when the vacancy will be filled.

Council members are Robert Allen, Kelly Moore, Harry Adams, Jimmy Joe DeRossett, Danny Hamilton, C.E. “Little Shag” Branham and Hansel Cooley.

There has been no notification of any special meeting set to fill the vacancy, and council is to meet in regular session Monday, June 23, at 6 p.m. at city hall. The meetings are open to the public.
