Prizes to be awarded for birdhouse design

by Maureen Dosier | Lawrence County Arts Council

The Lawrence County Arts Council is sponsoring its first Functional Homemade Birdhouse Contest.

All birdhouse entries must be submitted Saturday, Aug. 2, to the Lawrence County Library between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This contest is open to all ages and residents in and out of Lawrence County.

The only two rules are the birdhouse must be functional (holes sized for real birds) and homemade. The rest we leave up to your imagination.

It can be a single family house or multiple dwelling (for Martins) made out of new lumber or old scraps, embellished with architectural features, salvaged items, wood, tin or copper roof. It can look like a house or any shape you want. You can add decorative painting, clay or mosaic accents or leave it plain. It can be post mount, wall mount or hanging. You’re only limited by your own imagination.

There will be prizes and ribbons awarded in the most unique birdhouse and the best built birdhouse categories. Your birdhouses may also be entered in the Septemberfest Art Contest in the woodworking division on Aug. 30.

All entries will be displayed throughout the month of August for the public to enjoy.

Have fun creating and best of luck.
