LOUISA Fishing, sidewalk art and coloring fun what more could kids ask for?

How about an abundance of prizes, hot dogs, chips and pop?

On Aug. 2, 24 kids experienced all of this excitement at the first Kids Day at the Lake event. The day began with kids and parents lining the bank near the marina with poles and bait in hand in hope of hooking the big one. All bait and tackle were provided by local sponsors. Although the fishing was somewhat slow, all participants seemed to be having fun trying. A few lucky young anglers landed some nice-sized bluegill and quickly returned them back into the water.

Every few minutes, a name was called and the children's faces gleamed as they were awarded a prize.

After fishing, the kids moved to the sidewalks and were given a wealth of chalk to draw their favorite pictures. Many children drew pictures of fish and other outdoor-related themes. Prizes continued to be handed out. The kids then moved on to color an outdoor picture. All coloring materials were provided. Refreshments were then provided at no charge after all events were complete.

The event, which was set up by the Yatesville Lake State Park Marina with the assistance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, was a huge triumph. Although each event was set up in a contest format, no child went home a loser. All participants were awarded a prize simply for participating.

None of the events could have taken place without the help of local sponsors, which included McDonalds, 4-Star Bait, Frito Lay, Pamida, Coca-Cola, Advance Auto Parts, Mason Dixon and Tommy Mart.
