Students receive rewards, scholarships from MSU

MOREHEAD — Several Big Sandy area residents have received scholarships and awards at Morehead State University for the fall semester.

• Sarah Ann Sparks of Offutt is among those students receiving an Alumni Award and Presidential Scholarship for the fall semester.

Sparks, daughter of John and Sheila Sparks, is a graduate of Johnson Central High School. She is a state Governor’s Cup champion in English composition, a participant in the Commonwealth Diploma Program and a State Foreign Language Festival champion in Spanish costume. She has received 4-H honors and the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. She is also a member of the Sulphur Springs United Baptist Church.

• Shellie LeAnn Hayes of Langley has received a Presidential Scholarship.

Hayes, daughter of Keith Hayes of Langley, is a graduate of Allen Central High School. She was a 2002 Governor’s Scholar, WYMT Mountain Achiever and 2003 Basketball Homecoming Queen, President of Beta Club and Student Council, she is a member of Garrett First Baptist Church.

• Henry David Hicks, son of Cindy Martin of Martin, has also received a Presidential Scholarship.

Hicks is a graduate of The Piarist School. He is a member of Beta Club, Martin First Baptist Church and a Wofford Scholar. He received the Harvard University Prize Book award, President’s Education award and participated in a recent food drive.

• Kaylyn Jo Burke of Catlettsburg has received a Leadership Award for the fall semester.

Burke, a daughter of Joe and Teresa Burke, is a graduate of Lawrence County High School. She is a member of the Democratic Woman’s Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council and historian for Health Occupational Students of America.

She also volunteered at Three Rivers Medical Center and J. J. Jordan Geriatric Center.
