PHSAA fundraiser this weekend
PAINTSVILLE The Paintsville High School Alumni Association will sponsor the 4th Annual PHSAA All-Alumni Weekend Fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Paintsville Ramada Inn and Paintsville High School.

All PHS alumni and friends are invited to honor special guest Sgt Kevin Hannah, Class of 1998, who was wounded in Iraq. Also being recognized this year is all PHS band alums, and the classes of 1941, 1950, 1953, 1955, 1958 and 1963.

The PHSAA Sports Hall of Fame brunch starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Inductees are the Paintsville Comets 1932 state basketball tournament team; Dr. Mike "The Missile" Minix Sr., Class of 1961; Johnny "Peanut" LeMaster, Class of 1973; Coach Jim Wheeler, Class of 1938; and Carmel "Coots" Castle, Class of 1947.

The Distinguished Alumni Banquet begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Guest speakers will be Gerri Combs, Class of 1960, executive director of the Kentucky Arts Commission; and Larry Marsh, Class of 1957, president and CEO of Marsh and McBirney, Inc. of Fredrick, Md.

A memorial service is set for Sunday, Aug. 31, at 1:30 p.m. in the PHS Gym conducted by Rev. Jerry Scott, Class of 1967, pastor of the Highlands Church of Christ.

A household shower for the school's new Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Department will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The grand opening ceremony of the "New Blue" Paintsville High School will begin at 3 p.m. in the high school gym with many invited guest speakers.

The afternoon will close on Sunday with tours of the new school buildings and facilities led by PHS students.
