LOUISA Darrell Nathaniel Riffe of Louisa, a Pikeville College senior, is spending a semester in London, England, at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine.

Because of his good grades, the college was able to award him a scholarship from the Appalachian College Association. Once his tuition is paid to Pikeville, the scholarship covers his transportation to and from England, his tuition at Imperial College and his apartment.

Riffe, a psychology and history major with a strong interest in film, is taking four classes in London: British Life and Culture (required of all American students), Tudor England, Religion Through Film and Theatre, and The Films of Alfred Hitchcock. These courses will count toward his degree at Pikeville.

Since arriving in London on Aug. 31 his 22nd birthday Riffe has taken full advantage of the sights and experiences of the city. He has seen two plays The Complete Works of Shakespeare at Piccadilly Circus and the musical The Temptation of St. Anthony and is planning on attending other performances and concerts before his return to the states in mid-December.

He has also gone to the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of London, the Tate Museum, and the Portobello Road Market. One of his favorite places has been Oxford, which has more of a "small town" feel to it than London does. Riffe has also visited Blenheim Place, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, who is buried there. He even managed to see the set used in filming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third movie in that series which will come out in the spring of 2004.

Riffe spent the weekend of Sept. 19 in Scotland and has arranged to go to Ireland near the end of October to visit a friend who was an Irish exchange student at Pikeville last year. Riffe hopes to travel to Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and other places while he is in England.

Riffe is the fifth Pikeville College student to make this trip. The college is able to give one scholarship per semester, others can also go if they pay their own way.

Riffe is the son of Bill and Juanita Riffe of Louisa.
