Unselfish and Happy
The Pastor's Pen
by Pastor Jack Ward

Tomahawk Missionary Baptist Church

A fascinating study on the principle of the Golden Rule was conducted by Bernard Rimland, director of the Institute for Child Behavior Research. Rimland found that "the happiest people are those who help others."

Each person involved in the study was asked to list ten people he knew best and to label them as selfish or unselfish, using the following definitions of selfishness: a stable tendency to devote one's time and resources to one's own interests and welfare and an unwillingness to inconvenience one's self for others.

In categorizing the results, Rimland found that all of the people labeled happy were also labeled unselfish. He wrote that those "whose activities are devoted to bringing themselves happiness...are far less likely to be happy than those whose efforts are devoted to making others happy," Rimland concluded "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Martin Luther said "What is it to serve God and do his will? Nothing else than to show mercy to our neighbor. For it is our neighbor who needs our service; God in heaven needs it not."

Jesus knew to be happy we must be willing to serve others. John 13:14-17 "If I then, you Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, Verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."

Jesus talked about giving of ourselves in service to others. Luke 6:30 "Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away they goods ask them not again." Luke 6:38 "Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."

Service to our Lord Jesus Christ will cost us something. But the benefits far outweigh the cost. Look at the benefits we receive from serving Christ. John 10:28 "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
