|JCHS Quiz Bowl team captures state title|
LOUISVILLE — The Johnson Central High School Beta Club quiz bowl team solidified its spot in the national tournament by claiming the state title — and, in the process, knocked off the reigning national champion team.

The squad defeated Paul Lawrence Dunbar — the national champs — in the final round to claim the state title and move on to represent Kentucky as the champion team in the June national tournament in Atlanta.
Shefa Sikder, quiz bowl team member and Beta Club president, said a lot of the credit should go to the team's sponsors.
"Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Fultz, Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Lemaster were great," Sikder said. "They really helped us get ready for the tournament."
When asked about the pressure of meeting the reigning national champions in the final round, Sikder said that it was not that pressure-packed.
"We already knew a lot of members of that team," Sikder said. "We are actually friends with most of them so there was actually not that much pressure."
Quiz bowl team members were Sikder, Josh Daniel, Kevin Wells, and Chris Wells.
In addition to the team award, Johnson Central also walked away with four individual awards — one of which was an individual state champion.
Daniel placed first in the state in the science competition, Sikder finished second in English, Kelli Ratliff placed first in woodworking and Drew Trimble finished third in oratory.
"I'm really proud of this team," sponsor Brenda Pennington said. "They worked really hard and deserve all of the credit for the win."
