And the band plays on

AND THE BAND PLAYS ON: If you attended any of the University of Kentucky basketball games from mid-December to mid-January you may have taken a second look at the UK Band, which may have seemed a little more "mature." During the winter break, the band, you see, does not contain college students. It is the UK Alumni Pep Band, composed of UK graduates of the 1940s through 2003. They assemble every year during winter break and revive their old favorite school tunes, mainly from the 70s and 80s. The group has gotten raving comments from the UK press and provides not only music during pre-game, time-outs, and half-time, but also sideline entertainment for the crowd. This year's UK Alumni Pep Band performed at the Eastern Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina and Vanderbilt men's games as well as a couple of the UK Women's games. One of the members of his group from its inception has been Jane McKenzie-Wells (top right) of Paintsville. Janie played clarinet with the UK Wildcat Band in the early 1980s and still enjoys dusting off her horn every winter to join this group.
