Big Sandy Singers now holding mid-year auditions at Prestonsburg

01/18/2008 - PRESTONSBURG — Auditions will be held for the Big Sandy Singers at Big Sandy Community and Technical College, on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 4-7 p.m. on the Prestonsburg Campus, Pike Building, in Gearheart Auditorium.

The audition is open to currently enrolled BSCTC students or Morehead State Univerity through BSCTC students. Any person who is not currently enrolled or who does not plan to enroll for the spring 2008 semester of classes is ineligible for this round.

The Big Sandy Singers is the student singing ensemble from BSCTC and MSU on the BSCTC Campus. Those who are chosen from this rare mid-year audition process will receive a $600 scholarship to attend BSCTC this semester and recording experience.

The Big Sandy Singers are directed by BSCTC instructor and veteran Kentucky Opry member Laura Ford Hall, with Timothy Cooley as album producer and technical director, and Clayton Case as assistant director. The group performs approximately 50-60 shows each year for various civic functions and performs two concerts, traditionally held at the MAC in the winter and spring.

The Singers have performed several times on WYMT, at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center and the Mountain Arts Center as well as many other venues, including opening for Naomi Judd, Charlie Sizemore, singing for Hal Rogers' PRIDE Envi Awards, and singing for presidential candidate John Edwards. The group also takes shows into area high schools, presenting the Big Sandy Idol program and elementary schools, with a "go to college" and "drug free" message. The students who sing in the Big Sandy Singers serve as ambassadors for the college.

In addition to live performances, the Big Sandy Singers also record a group compilation CD each year. This year, the Singers' album Bring the Rain was released as well as their first Christmas album, Kentucky Christmas. Group members may also have the opportunity to record a solo album at no cost.

Anyone wishing to audition should arrive at Gearheart Auditorium any time between 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24. Auditionees will be taken into the audition on a first-come, first-served basis. Those auditioning should prepare one song (pop, country, or gospel style) with a karaoke track. The track must be karaoke (without lead vocals). Karaoke tracks can be easily ordered through or and are also available in the music section at Wal-Mart. Those auditioning will be judged on tone, pitch, vocal control, stage presence, blendability, and overall performance.

"We are excited about these mid-year auditions," said Hall. "We have so much fun and this is such a wonderful experience for students. Eastern Kentucky is full of talent, and we can't wait to hear what awaits us on January 24th."
