02/20/2008 - THE LAWRENCE COUNTY Democrat Women's Club met Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Lawrence County Courthouse for its regular monthly meeting. The guest speaker was former Assistant County Attorney Kenny Preston, who shared with the group the various duties of the county attorney's office. Preston is presently county attorney in Johnson County. He provided statistics concerning the crimes in the area, especially how drug abuse is growing rapidly. During the business meeting, several issues were brought before the members and approved. There will be two $1,500 scholarships given to seniors this year. A rummage sale will be held the last weekend in May; this is one of the fundraisers the club has to make money for the scholarship fund. The next monthly meeting will be held on March 6. Everyone is welcome to attend.
