'Exact story told here today': Citizens gather to commemorate historic tragedy

ST GEORGE – A major mistake in St. George's history was rectified on November 9 in the desert behind the city.

On a crisp fall day under bright sunlight, the site of the old Escalante No. 2 oil well was dedicated with a memorial by descendants of those who died in 1935.

In what some call the worst disaster in Washington County history, 10 local citizens and rig workers were killed when an oil derrick blew up 7 miles south of St. George on the night of March 6, 1935.

The flames of the explosion could be seen from a distance like a hurricane. People in Laverkin and Leeds called city officials to see if an earthquake had occurred.
