More than 100 years after his death, the mayor of St. George identified with the marked grave

ST GEORGE — A jeep traveling down a dirt road in a remote part of Washington County northwest of Gunlock last year led to a series of incidents that led to the rededication of a grave site for a man at St. George Cemetery. Perhaps the name was given.

Moreover, the man for whom the street was named apparently influenced the county's history, as he served as mayor of St. George, Washington County attorney, county commissioner, chairman of the county fair, and many other contributions, yet lay unmarked for more than a century.

This changed thanks to Hal and Suezun Hilburn.

“It was very strange,” said Hal Hilburn. “We couldn't believe the man who did all these things we were reading about and he didn't have a single stone. He was a great man.”
