ST GEORGE – The trial of a 30-year-old man accused of killing a 2-year-old boy in Washington City last year began Monday, where treating doctors outlined the injuries the toddler suffered that ended her life.

A jury was seated in the case of Randy Holt Lessing, 30, who is on trial on first-degree felony reckless child abuse homicide and second-degree felony obstruction of justice.

The case was filed following an incident reported on July 19, 2023, when police received a call that an unconscious 2-year-old boy had been admitted to St. George Regional Hospital.

Doctors told detectives Emmaline Mitchell, a toddler, had suffered massive head trauma. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was flown from St. George's to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, where she died five days later.
